SHIPPING SERVICES
The process of generating an accurate laboratory test result begins with the quality of the
specimen received. Furthermore, quick turnaround time can be assured if samples arrive at the laboratory as
safely and quickly as possible. There are drivers/messengers who will promptly collect specimens from
hospitals, clinics and surgeries on a 24 hour basis everyday of the year.
The following should be strictly adhered to:
- Specimen must be collected in correct tube, container, preservative or media. (N.B. Once it has been
noticed that a wrong tube or container, preservative or media has been used; do not transfer the same
specimen to the correct receiver. Discard and collect a fresh specimen to avoid contamination.)
- Specimen must be handled appropriately with respect to temperature, timing or storage requirements.
- Contaminated, lipaemic or gross;y haemolysed specimen may be rejected by the laboratory depending
on the test(s) being requested. A fresh sample would thus be required.
- Specimen tubes, preservatives or media must not be expired.
- Specimens potentially hazardous to the laboratory personnel should be handled with care and due notice about that such should always be given to the GPL.
- Whenever in doubt, client should call our logistics officer regarding appropriate handling of specimen.
